Naoko Tosa
Naoko Tosa is a media artist whose practice explores the relationship between Japanese aesthetics, technology, the body, sound, and natural phenomena. Her work has been exhibited and collected by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, and presented at major institutions including the National Museum of Art, Osaka. After receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo, Tosa worked at ATR’s Media Integration & Communication Laboratory and later became an Artist Fellow at MIT’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies (2001–2004), where she developed “Cultural Computing,” a framework for reinterpreting culture through computation and artistic expression. She has been a Professor at Kyoto University since 2005. In 2016, as a Cultural Exchange Ambassador for Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, she presented Sound of Ikebana: Spring across more than 60 digital billboards in Times Square. Her practice extends media art toward immersive, generative, and culturally rooted forms of contemporary expression internationally.
