Onassis ONX Studio Showcase
Onassis ONX Studio Showcase
Official Creative Collaborator: Tribeca Festival
June 9 - June 20, Daily: 12pm-8pm
Members of the Onassis ONX cohort will present new and original work, along with a behind-the-scenes component of their creative process, inviting audience members in to see how this work is created, and in some cases, to be a part of it.
Each day of the Showcase will be different from the previous, as projects and installations will rotate and morph. A session may include live motion-capture filming, hybrid live/Virtual Reality (VR) performance, social VR experience, a talk show in VR, or a spatial audio experience.
Complementing the installations and experiences are several VR stations that will present finished work by Onassis ONX artists, previously only seen during limited runs at festivals such as Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Festival, and SXSW.
Works on View:
IF NOT NOW
Director: Kordae Jatafa Henry
Creative Director: Jeremy Kamal
June 9: Live performance and filming
June 10-12: VR Experience
Centered around mythology, IF NOT NOW utilizes the body through a “Tech Demo” performance using motion capture technology in the real to re-imagine the virtual. The audience will experience a Black Knight satellite as a digital avatar; directly linked to a physical body through performance capture technology.
As a flex performer dances with a computer generated world; the audience will witness ‘rendered’ graphics of space. Through a radical approach that uses documentation as a tool to engage notions of the virtual character, the work grasps the power of Real-Time installation to cultivate the next frontier for Black speculative motion pictures.
Essential support for this project: Serial Pictures, Warner Media, Sundance New Frontier, Maps, Artizan Grant
Anti-Gone (Performance Excerpt)
Artist: Theo Triantafyllidis
Live Performances: June 17-June 20
Anti-Gone is a Mixed Reality Performance by Theo Triantafyllidis, based on the comic book of the same name by Connor Willumsen. Adapting the mechanics of open world video games, Anti-Gone revises traditional narrative into a continuous simulation, taking place in a meticulously crafted 3D world, full of visual signifiers of paradise: a bright blue ocean, lush vegetation, a sunken city lit by glowing sunsets. Spyda and Lynxa are a couple navigating this world frictionlessly. On their sailboat, they glide from shopping to movies to psychedelic drugs. In this post-climate change world, environmental catastrophe and late-capitalist culture have become oddly normalized.
For the Onassis ONX Studio Showcase, a 45 excerpt of Anti-Gone will be performed for an intimate audience that will have a chance to participate and interact with the live performers and change the course of the narrative.
Live performances of Anti-Gone can be seen at the following times:
17th: 1pm, 2pm, 4pm, 5pm, 7pm
18th: 1pm, 3pm, 4pm, 7pm

NEW MEETINGS
Artist: Sarah Rothberg
On view June 9-20, with live performances throughout
NEW MEETINGS is a performance of experimental dialogues, inspired by fluxus scores, experimental conversational styles (ie Bohm dialogue, nonviolent communication, community agreements), and a question: what is a meeting? Two people in different locations (the artist and a guest) share a virtual environment, following a set of parameters to encourage emergent movement and conversation. The audience, in-person and online, can see/hear their interaction - and its feedback loop with the environment - on a 2D display. Together, the VR participants co-create an artwork in real-time: a piece of generative software art, with people as part of the software.
